Cooking the Cookbooks
July 30, 2012
Tavia Kowalchuk, ’95, who majored in writing and English, markets cookbooks for William Morrow Cookbooks, an imprint of Harper Collins. She lives in Queens, N.Y.
Which cookbooks sell best: “We definitely publish cookbooks that play up cooking with local foods, cooking with whole ingredients, cooking seasonally. But the No. 1 thing people love about cookbooks is when they are written by personalities that they know.”
Notable chefs and authors she markets books for: Guy Fieri, Emeril Lagasse, Ree Drummond, Patricia Wells, and food truck pioneer Kim Ima
Peak sales time: Mother’s Day and Christmas
How are e-books affecting cookbook sales: “The growth of e-books has really affected the print sales of fiction most specifically. Illustrated books and especially books that are highly designed—like cookbooks—fell to a lesser degree.”
