Sellinger executive-in-residence makes first “University” gift

The inspiration came to John McFadden in a flash. As the day of Loyola’s designation change approached, it struck him that maybe, just maybe, he could be the first donor to make a gift to Loyola University Maryland. And so he is.

McFadden’s gift—the first official donation to Loyola University Maryland—establishes an endowed scholarship for the Sellinger School of Business and Management.

The recipient must be a graduate of Baltimore’s Cristo Rey Jesuit High School or the National Academy Foundation (NAF) High School who wishes to pursue an undergraduate degree in the Sellinger School. An additional gift will be used each year to recognize a Sellinger student who excels as an information systems technology major.

“I restricted my scholarship to the Cristo Rey and NAF schools because I wanted to be sure my gift scholarship benefited an underprivileged student,” said McFadden. “That’s a half-century of Jesuit influence coming out.”

That influence began with his years at Baltimore’s Loyola High School. It stayed with him while he obtained his BSME degree at Villanova University and M.S. degree at George Washington University and built an illustrious 24-year career in information technology at Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Maryland National Bank.

McFadden then made a career shift. In 1989, at the request of then-Provost Thomas Scheye, Ph.D., McFadden began a 17-year tenure as Loyola’s chief information officer. Now an executive-in-residence at the Sellinger School, McFadden teaches part-time at Loyola and also serves as a mentor for Sellinger students and students at NAF, where he’s also on the Board of Directors.

“I’ve always tried to live up to the Ignatian ideal of learning, leading, and serving,” said McFadden. “And like all of us, I fall short. But I’m now fully in the sharing phase of my life. Loyola has a new name, and I feel like I have a new life.”
